I got called to be the brakeman on the "B PISLAC." Since I'm on Board 8 I can get called to be a brakeman. I knew by he symbol that we would be taking our train from Pisgah to Barstow, but where was our power? I found out that it was in the South House Exension. The two motors were coupled together, but the cable and the hoses were not hooked up. My conductor and I hooked them up. We also had to do a Locomotive Airbrake test. Since there were two of us, and there were only two motors, it didn't take long. I dropped the derail and the switch and we shoved back. My engineer pulled ahead over the switch and I lined it back. My conductor grabbed an ETD and hooked it up to the hose in the front of the motor so it would be charged up and so it could be armed. When we got to Pisgah our train was in the South siding. My conductor got off and mounted the ETD on the rear of the train. Then we pulled ahead and I got off at "the cut." (Crews that set cars out in this siding are supposed to make a cut to avoid blocking the crossover switch. The crew that had set the cars in there had done so. I got off at the cut an waited while my engineer and conductor lined the switch into the siding and hooked onto the head of the train. When they were ready they called me on the radio. I had the engineer sove bck 5 cars to the shook and laced the air hoses. I walked to the rear of the train. (It was quite a walk too). It was cold! It was night. I got to the rear of the train and did the "two way." My conductor soon joined me. The engineer did the set. We walked up, checking the brakes and I released handbrakes as we went We got up to the head end of the train.
Someone would have to line the switch, roll the train by, an then our engineer would have to do a "six dot six" to back up and pick the person up. But, there was a prolbem. We were inside the OS. Someone wold have to "ride the shove" until we were through the OS. As it was we had to wait over an hour because there was a Form B and they were single tracking. Finally the dispatcher gave us the authority to come out. My conductor took it upon himself to do the dirty work. We were back on the main and took our train to Barstow. We got relieved on Main Two. We were DOL by the time we tied up.
Ah, Barstow! It seemed like a long time since I had been there. Can't say that I missed it. It was lmost 4 am by the time I got into bed. I got up for the free breakfast at 6 am, then went back to bed and slept for 4 hours. I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep. I toook some sleeping pills and slept about 4 hours. I got called for a deadhead back to Needles with the engineer and the conductor I came with. We were supposed to deahead on an H train. That had to be a mistake! We don't deadhead on H trains.
I got down to the depot and ther were several people who had been called to deadhead- and not enough trains. The trainmaster told me that I could deadhead on a stack train. 4 oher guys wanted to deadhead on the same stack train but there wre only 3 motors on the head end. I volunteered to sit in the brakeman seat, even though it wuld be uncomfortable.
I read until my eyes got tired, then I slept for a few. It was a long, uncomfortable ride. Finally we were in Needles. After I got off the train I had to cross 4 sets of tracks to get to the depot. I think I tied up around 1 am. I'm not showing out for over 24 hours. I can use the rest. My legs are still tired.
